Description

Itopride is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and dopamine (D2) receptor antagonist used to treat

symptoms of functional dyspepsia such as nausea and vomiting.

Indications

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as-


  • Functional dyspepsia
  • Non-ulcer dyspepsia
  • Postprandial fullness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort

Dosage & Administration

The adult oral dosage of Itopride Hydrochloride is 150 mg daily in three divided doses before meals. The dose may be reduced according to patients age and symptoms

Side Effects

Potential side effects of Itopride Hydrochloride includes-

  • Blood and lymphatic system disorder: Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia
  • Immune system disorder: Anaphylactoid reaction
  • Endocrine disorder: Increased prolactin level and gynecomastia
  • Nervous system disorder: Dizziness, headache and tremor
  • Gastrointestinal disorders: Diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, increased saliva and nausea
  • Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Rash, redness and itching
  • Hepatobiliary disorder: Jaundice

Precautions

Itopride Hydrochloride should be used in caution as it enhances the action of acetylcholine. Also, caution should be taken for those who are suffering from Parkinson disease or other conditions involving dopamine regulation issues. Itopride Hydrochloride may make you feel dizzy, thus you should be cautious while driving. Itopride Hydrochloride should not be used aimlessly for a long term when no improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms is observed.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant women: The safety of Itopride Hydrochloride in pregnant women has not been
established.

Lactating mother: Use of this medicine in breastfeeding mothers is not recommended. If the need
of this medicine is absolutely necessary then breastfeeding should be discontinued prior to uptake.

Drug Interaction

Itopride Hydrochloride has gastrokinetic action. So, it could influence the absorption of concomitantly orally administered drugs. Particularly caution should be taken with drugs with a narrow therapeutic index, sustained release or enteric coated formulations. Concomitant administration with anti-cholinergic drugs e.g. Tiquizium bromide, Scopolamine butyl bromide, Timepidium bromide etc. may reduce the action of Itopride Hydrochloride.

Over Dose

There have been no reported cases of overdose in human. In case of excessive overdose, the usual measures of gastric lavage and symptomatic therapy should be applied.

Storage

Do not store above 30 ÂșC. Keep away from light and out of the reach of children.
