Trego Nasal Ointment(Mupirocin)

Presentation
Trego Nasal Ointment: Each gram of nasal ointment contains Mupirocin Calcium BP equivalent to Mupirocin 20 mg.
Description
Mupirocin 2% nasal ointment is a topical antibacterial agent. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase. It is bactericidal at concentrations achieved by topical intranasal administration. It is highly protein bound (>97%). The effect of nasal secretions on the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of intranasally applied Mupirocin has not been determined.
Indications
Mupirocin nasal ointment is indicated for the eradication of nasal colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Dosage & Administration
For intranasal use only.
Adults and children:
Mupirocin Nasal Ointment should be applied to the nostrils 2 to 3 times daily for 5 days as follows:
A small amount of the ointment about the size of a match head is to be placed on the little finger and applied to the inside of one nostril and repeated it for other nostril. Then the nostrils are closed by pressing the sides of the nose together; this will spread the ointment around the nostrils. A cotton bud may be used instead of the little finger for the application in particular patients who are very ill.
Side Effects
The most frequent adverse reactions observed are headache, rhinitis, respiratory disorders, pharyngitis, taste perversion, burning/stinging, cough, and pruritus.
Precautions
Mupirocin nasal ointment can cause severe skin reactions or allergies. Thrush (a yeast infection) may develop if it is used for a long time. It should be kept away from eyes. If the ointment gets into eyes accidentally, wash them thoroughly with water.
Pharmacokinetic data in neonates and premature infants indicate that, unlike in adults, significant systemic absorption occurred following intranasal administration of Mupirocin nasal ointment in this population.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B.
Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Mupirocin nasal ointment (contains equivalent of 2% Mupirocin free acid) in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Lactation: It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Mupirocin nasal ointment is administered to a nursing woman.
Drug Interaction
Due to its mode of action, Mupirocin does not demonstrate cross resistance with other classes of antimicrobial agents.
Storage
Do not store above 30 C. Keep away from light and out of the reach of children.
