Abdolax(Sodium Picosulfate)

Presentation

Abdolax Tablet: Each tablet contains Sodium Picosulfate BP 10 mg.

Abdolax Oral solution: Each 5ml contains Sodium Picosulfate BP 5 mg.

Description

Sodium Picosulfate is a locally acting laxative from the triarylmethane group. It has a dual action - stimulating the mucosa of both the large intestine causing colonic peristalsis and of the rectum causing increased motility and a feeling of rectal fullness.

Indications

Indicated in relief from functional, prolonged and recurrent constipation, bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth and radiological investigations.

Dosage & Administration

1. Adult and children above 10 years-5 - 10 mg Tablet dose/day-Oral Solution dose/day5-10 ml
2.Children aged 4-10 years-2.5 – 5 mg Tablet dose/day-2.5-5 mlOral Solution dose/day
3.Children aged 1 month- 4 years-0.25 ml/kg body weight Oral Solution dose/day
This medication is recommended to be taken at night to produce evacuation the following morning. The tablet should be swallowed with adequate fluid. The maintenance of an adequate fluid intake during treatment is essential, especially for younger patients and the elderly who are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration. Sodium Picosulfate should not be taken every day for more than five days without investigating the cause of constipation

Side Effects

Most common adverse reactions are abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting

Precautions

Prolonged excessive use of Sodium Picosulfate may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance and hypokalaemia. Care should be taken in patients with recent gastro-intestinal surgery and in patients with renal impairment, heart disease or inflammatory bowel disease. It should be used with caution in patients on drugs that might affect water and/or electrolyte balance e.g. diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium. Sodium Picosulfate may modify the absorption of regularly prescribed oral medication and should be used with caution.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of this medicine in pregnancy has not been established. Caution is required during lactation as small amounts of this medicine may pass into breast milk.

Do not store above 30 0C. Keep away from light and out of the reach of children
