Presentation
Each capsule contains Cloxacillin Sodium BP equivalent to Cloxacillin 500 mg

Description
Cloxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant bactericidal semi-synthetic penicillin. It is isoxazolyl penicillin. It is acid-stable and therefore can be given by mouth

Indications and Uses
It is indicated to treat infections caused by gram-positive microorganisms. It is also indicated to treat infection caused by penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus. Infections treated with cloxacillin are as follows:

Skin and soft tissue infections: Bolus, abscess, cellulitis, curbuncles, furunculosis, infected wounds, infected burns, protection for skin grafts and other infections e.g. ulcer, eczema and acne.

Respiratory tract, ear, nose and tongue infections: Pneumonia, lung abscess, tonsillitis, otitis media and externa, pharyngitis.

Other infections caused by sensitive organisms: Osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, meningitis and septicemia

Contraindications
Cloxacillin should not be given to patients who are sensitive to penicillin. Cloxacillin may interact with bacteriostatic antibacterials such as chloramphenicol and tetracyclines and may be incompatible in vitro with other drugs including a number of other antibacterials

Dosage And Administration
Adult usual dose is 500 mg 4 times daily.
Dose may be doubled in severe infection and should be taken at least 30 minutes before food or as directed by the physician


Precautions
Cloxacillin should be given with caution to patients with known history of allergy. The possibility of a prolonged bleeding time following oral treatment with a broad-spectrum drug like cloxacillin should be borne in mind in patients receiving anticoagulants.

Side Effects
Side effects are as with other penicillins like skin rash, anaphylactic shock and other hypersensitivity reactions e.g. transient diarrhoea, nausea, heart burn, pruritus and disturbance of blood electrolytes

Use in pregnancy & lactation
No known study has been established for cloxacillin on pregnant women. However, accordingly the emergence of treatment or as directed by the physician, pregnant women can administer cloxacillin
