Kilbac Cefuroxime 125 & 250 mg tablet Presentation Kilbac 125: Each film-coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 125 mg. Kilbac 250: Each film-coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 250 mg. Description Cefuroxime Axetil is an oral prodrug of the bactericidal cephalosporin antibiotic Cefuroxime, which is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms including many beta-lactamase producing strains. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria. Indications and Uses Cefuroxime is indicated in the treatment of: Upper respiratory tract infections: Ear, nose, throat infections, such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Lower respiratory tract infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. Genito-urinary tract infections: Pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis, gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. Skin and soft tissue infection: Furunculosis, pyoderma and impetigo. Lyme disease: Erythema marginatum. However, a few side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain may occur. As with other broad-spectrum antibiotics, prolonged administration of Cefuroxime Axetil may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms. Rarely (<0.2%) renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash and serum sickness like urticaria may appear. Contraindications Patients with known allergy to cephalosporins & pseudomembranous colitis are contraindicated. Precautions Cefuroxime should be given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics & who have history of colitis. Use in pregnancy & lactation Pregnancy: While all antibiotics should be avoided in the first trimester if possible. However, Cefuroxime has been safely used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections. Nursing mothers: Cefuroxime is excreted into the milk in small quantities. However, the possibility of sensitizing the infant should be kept in mind. Drug interactions Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%. Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime and tend to cancel the effect of postprandial absorption. Overdosage Signs and symptoms: Overdosage of Cefuroxime can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management: Serum levels of Cefuroxime can be reduced by haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Commercial Pack Kilbac 125: Each box contains 5 Alu-Alu blister strips of 4 tablets. Kilbac 250: Each box contains 4 Alu-Alu blister strips of 4 tablets. |
