Doresa Tegaserod tablet Presentation Doresa : Each tablet contains Tegaserod hydrogen maleate INN equivalent to Tegaserod 6 mg. Description Tegaserod is an amino guanidine-indole with selective and partial 5-HT4 receptor agonistic activity. It binds to 5HT4 receptors in gastrointestinal tract and stimulates gastrointestinal motility and intestinal peristaltic reflex, and inhibits intestinal sensitivity. Tegaserod is indicated for the treatment of constipation predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) where main symptoms are constipation and abdominal pain and/or discomfort. One tablet twice daily orally before meal for a maximum of 12 weeks. Treatment should be discontinued if there has been no response after four weeks. Use in children: There is no clinical trial in document to safety and efficacy of tegaserod in children. Therefore, it is not recommended for use in children. Use in renal and hepatic insufficiency: A similar dosage schedule can be followed for patients with mild to moderate renal and hepatic insufficiency. Generally well-tolerated but some patients may experience diarrhoea which is transient and resolves during continued treatment without any need for dose modification. Less frequent side effects are headache, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence, dizziness, back pain etc. Contraindications Tegaserod is not recommended in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment. It is also contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to tegaserod or any excipient of this formulation. Precautions Caution is recommended when using tegaserod in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Use in Pregnancy & Lactation Pregnancy: There is no adequate well controlled study regarding use of tegaserod in pregnant women. Therefore, it should not be taken during pregnancy unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Nursing Mother: Tegaserod is not indicated in nursing mother. Drug interaction During clinical studies with tegaserod no drug-drug interaction was reported. Overdosage Signs and symptoms of overdosage may include diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain and orthostatic hypotension. As in any case of over dose, general supportive measures should be utilized.
